Revisiting NTNU research on impedance based stability analysis through application studies

The lecture will be based on the research done in the topic of Impedance-based stability analysis of power electronics systems, under the NTNU-SJTU cooperation from 2012 until now. It will start with the basics of the Impedance-based stability analysis method, going from impedance modeling in the dq domain, moving towards the motivations for the emergence of the sequence domain impedance with its modified sequence domain (MSD) definition and the proposal of an equivalent SISO impedance modeling. The use of the Nyquist criterion in its classical and generalized forms will be discussed in the light of the different properties of the impedance models (MIMO, SISO). The application of the impedance-based method in the stability study of network of impedances, impedance aggregation and identification techniques and stability-oriented network planning will be elaborated and discussed. These methods will be expounded through various application examples in the realm of renewable energy integration through power electronic interfaces. The most recent developments in the topic of impedance will be introduced, to point out the foreseen new directions where research efforts are needed. Additionally in last decades, our solution landscape has expanded to power-gen battery application along with high efficiency Dynamic UPS solutions in the similar power range. The system integration is facilitated by our digital solutions, microgrid control solutions, power management solutions, remote control solutions etc. working as the brain for the big plants in demanding domains such as datacenter application, renewable firms, mining applications, rail engines, yachts, fast ferry etc. With recent commitment of EU Commission to increase the GHG emission reduction target from 40% to 55% by 2030 and plan to turn this to a legal commitment, Rolls-Royce Power System has committed to deliver 100% CO2 neutral solutions by 2050, which is called NET ZERO target. With this transformation, Rolls-Royce Power System has already upgraded the solution portfolio to deliver Fuel cell Solutions, Hydrogen and sustainable fuel based Engine/ genset solutions as well as electrolyser solutions for stationary as well as Marine applications. The fast rise of the oil prices in the first months of 2022 is painful but can be a chance to speed up the change to electric vehicles as they become more competitive in terms of cost. With government support, the number of cars in countries like Poland is rising; however, still, the bottleneck is the lack of suitable charging infrastructure. There is no doubt that widely available and fast charging infrastructure is a key to the success of the e-mobility revolution. Experiences from the field show in many cases that installation of the classical electrical vehicle chargers maybe not be enough. When the peak power of the charging system is higher than the available power of the connection point, we may need energy storage. The best solution is to take advantage of the used batteries, which do not fulfil automotive standards but can still be applied in less demanding applications. Another challenge is the rising voltage of the batteries to be charged; the internal DC links of the charging stations may also reach the medium voltage level or become bipolar. Moreover, the latest technologies, to mention Silicon Carbide power devices, are fast spreading in the EV chargers. Finally, to reduce the system cost and improve reliability, the modular approach is required. Some of these issues are addressed in the project “Modularized, Reconfigurable and Bidirectional Charging Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles with Silicon Carbide Power Electronics (MoReSiC)”, conducted by teams from Warsaw University of Technology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim and Markel sp. z o.o. The first outcomes of the project will be presented and discussed during the workshop, but the presentations on the advanced charging systems from other research groups will also take place. The fast rise of the oil prices in the first months of 2022 is painful but can be a chance to speed up the change to electric vehicles as they become more competitive in terms of cost. With government support, the number of cars in countries like Poland is rising; however, still, the bottleneck is the lack of suitable charging infrastructure. There is no doubt that widely available and fast charging infrastructure is a key to the success of the e-mobility revolution. Experiences from the field show in many cases that installation of the classical electrical vehicle chargers maybe not be enough. When the peak power of the charging system is higher than the available power of the connection point, we may need energy storage. The best solution is to take advantage of the used batteries, which do not fulfil automotive standards but can still be applied in less demanding applications. Another challenge is the rising voltage of the batteries to be charged; the internal DC links of the charging stations may also reach the medium voltage level or become bipolar. Moreover, the latest technologies, to mention Silicon Carbide power devices, are fast spreading in the EV chargers. Finally, to reduce the system cost and improve reliability, the modular approach is required. Some of these issues are addressed in the project “Modularized, Reconfigurable and Bidirectional Charging Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles with Silicon Carbide Power Electronics (MoReSiC)”, conducted by teams from Warsaw University of Technology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim and Markel sp. z o.o. The first outcomes of the project will be presented and discussed during the workshop, but the presentations on the advanced charging systems from other research groups will also take place. Invited Lecture: The myelin-weighted connectome: A new look at neurodegenerative diseases

Myelin plays a crucial role in how reliably the signal travels from one neuron to another. Many neurological diseases affect myelin and cause disturbed signal transmission in the brain network. A convenient way to better understand not just pathology, but also how the brain works, is through connectomics. Connectomics provides a unique way to model the brain as a network of interconnected regions. Additionally, it is common to assign weights to the connections that could represent some underlying microstructural property. However, the well-established standard diffusion-derived measures (such as the fractional anisotropy (FA) and the number of streamlines) lack specificity. Therefore, the connectomes weighted with the standard diffusion-derived metrics may not be able to fully characterize the underlying changes caused by a specific pathology. This talk focuses on the myelin-weighted connectome, a novel method that complements the brain networks with a myelin-sensitive measure. A wide range of myelin-sensitive MRI-derived metrics can be used to weigh the connectome, including the longitudinal relaxation rate and the Magnetization Transfer Ratio. But the question is which one is better? After establishing the myelin-weighted connectome in healthy individuals, it was employed to study the alterations of myelin in individuals with Parkinson’s Disease and Multiple Sclerosis. Generally, the studies show that the myelin-weighted connectome can offer a more comprehensive understanding of brain microstructure and the white matter myeloarchitecture. Moreover, it could potentially lead to the development of new biomarkers that can capture the early microstructural changes caused by pathologies affecting the myelin. The event is partially supported by #IEEE Nordic Countries Nanotechnology Council Chapter, #interreg Baltic Sea "GlassCircle" Project and #Digi NANO/Microfactory Lab Hackathon on circular use of glass fiber production scraps and cut-off materials, is organized by Riga Technical University (Latvia) jointly with project partners from Lulea University of Technology (Sweden) and Aarhus University (Denmark). Hackathon is supported by industrial partners Hitachi Energy and Podcomp AB as well as Valmiera Glass (one of the biggest glass fiber producers in the Baltic Sea Region). Such glass fiber residues are generated daily during the production of glass fiber itself and from manufacturing of sports equipment and different industrial goods (wind turbine blades, reservoirs, insulators used in electrical equipment, bathroom units, housing for equipment or transportation industry, etc.). Current practice is that the residue glass fiber, in spite that it is perfectly useful material, is collected and delivered to landfills as industrial waste. This adds tons of industrial waste and loss of valuable resources. The idea of the hackathon is to bring together students from different subject areas to form teams and generate ideas with the possibility to test ideas, create prototypes and practically work at laboratory and prototyping space. An Efficient Fault Classification Method in Solar Photovoltaic Modules using Convolutional Neural Network”

As the continuous consumption of fossil fuels has caused serious diseases, environmental pollution, and distributing the ecological balance, renewable energy sources (RESs) such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, and geothermal energy have started to attract great attention all over the world. The use of renewable and low-carbon energy sources plays a significant role in supplying electrical energy demands for sustainable and environmentally friendly energy production. Photovoltaic (PV) power generation is one of the remarkable energy types to provide clean and sustainable energy. However, losses of electricity production are generally caused by the presence of various anomalies influencing the operation systems in PV plants. Therefore, rapid fault detection and classification of PV modules can help to increase the reliability of the PV systems and reduce operating costs. In this study, an efficient PV fault detection method is proposed to classify different types of PV module anomalies using thermographic images. The proposed method is designed as a multi-scale convolutional neural network (CNN) with three branches based on the transfer learning strategy. The convolutional branches include multi-scale kernels with levels of visual perception and utilize pre-trained knowledge of the transferred network to improve the representation capability of the network. To overcome the imbalanced class distribution of the raw dataset, the oversampling technique is performed with the offline augmentation method, and the network performance is increased. In the experiments, eleven types of PV module faults such as cracking, diode, hot spot, offline module, and other classes are utilized. The experimental results show that the proposed method gives higher classification accuracy and robustness in PV panel faults and outperforms the pre-trained deep learning methods and existing studies. Advanced Prediction Techniques Applied to Smart Grids

The power system industry is shifting towards a new digitalization era to better manage risk within volatile energy commodities, increase customer engagement, and enhance efficiency via grid optimization. Data analytics play a vital role in this transformation and, as such, different measurement architectures have been used and implemented to facilitate data capturing process and supervisory control at the generation, transmission, and distribution levels. This seminar will briefly review the recent outcomes of some smart grid challenges addressed by novel prediction techniques. At the generation level, decomposition techniques have been applied to handle the inherent uncertainty in short-term wind power prediction. At the transmission level, dynamic thermal line rating prediction has been studied as a viable solution to reduce congestion and utilize the actual capacity of the line. Considering the high inclusion of phasor measurement units at the transmission level, cutting-edge methods have been proposed to address stability status prediction of the grid following a contingency. Finally, at the distribution level, real-life data obtained from advanced metering infrastructure have been used for load prediction and customer segmentation.
